In the silent Linden : this blog is a diary about my - Barbara Beeckmans - work as an artist. I work with ink, drypoint, etching, watercolour.
Hier kun je ook iets proeven van wat er gebeurt in de stille Linde : het kunsthuis, de droomboom, de stille aanraking van seiki en shiatsu. Welkom.

Stillness and Mirroring, Root and Food

In this time of stillness, meditation and prayer beads,
of reading, studying, and nourishing us with simple good warm food,
where nothing needs to be created
only a wind of change moves, still quietly, and close to the earth,
and this little owl, born in an autumn breeze in 2010, left to her new home
where she was long expected,
where she knows the friendship of more than one deep soul.

The mirror of friendship and sisterhood, the shelter of roots,
the quiet open soul where tree and owl can root and hoot.

The figure with the trident in the distant doorway can be Shiva,
or the wounded fisher King ... I thought of both, drawing this detail.

The animals are great, wise, warm, royal companions of our souls.
Amazing teachers. They are so familiar with paths we do not know.

The mirroring in a deep mysterious water,
where may that be??

Writing about souls and Mother and roots
in the new year it can be véry heartwarming and véry empowering to pay attention to
the Grandmothers in the writings of Sharon McErlane and
the Grand Mother in the new book of Clarissa Pinkola Estés.
We need to eat our food. Blessings.

11 x words from you and me:

  1. When I come here, I often wish we were not so very far away, because of how close my soul feels to your visions. This drawing is a deep soul story, and it feels so familiar for me - trees and roots and owls, a few cats, deep waters, sisters and Grandmothers. I love the Black Madonna in the tree, how wonderful!

I love the last two books of Estes - I listened to the audio book version of "The Dangerous Old Woman" last year again and again. I even brought it into school and played one of the CDs for my Myth & Symbol class - they were moved and loved it - men and women. I don't know Sharon McErlane, I will check her out, thanks!

  2. Hallo Valerianna, but see how very close we are :D
And when you come to Europe again, or when I visit America, we can meet.
This winter I will listen to the Dangerous Old Woman, I'll try to find her, she must be around ;X Midwinter blessings to you.

  3. dark

    I heard a bird sing
    In the dark of December
    A magical thing
    And sweet to remember.

    We are nearer to Spring
    Than we were in September.
    I heard a bird sing
    In the dark of December.

  6. There is incredibly beautiful imagery here! I feel that if I enter into this world I will be welcomed warmly. "Where nothing needs to be created, only a wind of change moves". Beautiful words that recognize and know deep stillness. Wonderful sisterhood and animal spirit love,

  10. Dear Barbara, Dear Stille Linde,
I will write my comment in English which is of course unfamiliar for us as our mother tongue is Dutch. Anyway, I would like to express on your beautiful blog my gratitude for this text, this poem accompanying and adding a lot of value to the drawing which we call " het uiltje".
As you know I really appreciate literature and symbols and metaphors and now I can find this side by side in your art: text and drawing reinforcing each other. The friendship is expressed in the most harmonious way and how I like the animals. They are so powerful. As you know, I imagine the two women as being you and me, two friends standing independently and yet sharing peace and wisdom (and very often pleasure). I must say, even in printed version, from computer the drawing remains strong and gives a lot to consider.

Thank you so much for this! Lut
